Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament have indicated that they will honour a recall by the Speaker of the House to attend Parliament today. This is in spite of their earlier protest against the Speaker recalling members to sit to pass the controversial CI 73 creating 45 new constituencies which has undergone the mandatory 21 sitting days to mature into law.
The opposition NPP and some civil society groups have criticized the Electoral Commission’s haste in the creation of the constituencies.
The Commission itself has been sued by several organizations and individuals who argued its action is illegal.
Minority NPP MPs had intimated they were unlikely to honour today’s recall, but their leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News they have decided to continue their protest on the floor of the house.
However, NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie says NPP parliamentary aspirants who honour the invitation risk losing their seats.
“The display of the register is more important than going to sit in parliament for 21 sitting days because Afari Gyan, has created 45 constituencies which nobody wants in this country.”
Mr Owusu Afriyie was speaking to Joy News during a campaign tour with NPP flag bearer Nana Akufo Addo at Adenta yesterday.
But the Minority Leader is optimistic both sides of the House will reach a compromise to settle their differences.
