Drogba’s club Shanghai Shenhua, where he is a team-mate of ex-Stamford Bridge colleague Nicolas Anelka, is being rocked by boardroom power struggles, and the paper says that could mean Drogba making a swift journey back to England.
It adds: “The Gunners are desperate to find a proven scorer to replace Robin van Persie, and they have made enquiries with the Chinese club to see if there is a way of bringing the striker, 34, back to London.”
Drogba is reported to be on £200,000 a week in China. When rumours of unrest at his club first surfaced, speculation linked him with a switch to either Tottenham or Liverpool.
In other Arsenal-related news, the Sun says Juventus are interested in signing Theo Walcott – but they are only prepared to offer £10 million, less than the Gunners want.
The paper quotes an “insider” as saying: “Juve have been interested in Walcott for some time, but we are coming to the decisive moment.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool and Juventus are battling for the signature of young Argentine midfielder Vietto. The £4 million-rated Racing Club Avellaneda player, 18, has already been watched by Anfield scouts this season, the Mirrorreports.
New Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris isn’t happy that he isn’t playing. Reports earlier in the week suggested that he would be seeking “clear the air talks” with Andre Villas-Boas, and he presumably won’t have been made any happier by the intervention of Benoit Assou- Ekotto.
Assou- Ekotto has thrown his weight firmly behind in-form first choice Brad Friedel, who was outstanding in the 1-1 White Hart Lane draw against Norwich recently, with the Mailreporting him as saying: “It won’t be easy for him because there is competition. He will have to fight to get the position in the team.
“We currently have a keeper who doesn’t make any mistakes. If our keeper doesn’t make any mistakes, there is no reason to change.”
And finally, the Star says Manchester City “are closing in on a £12 million deal to land Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic”.
The paper says City boss Roberto Mancini has held talks with the 22-year-old’s club, Fiorentina, about a pre-contract agreement. The Montenegro forward has scored 10 goals in 21 appearances for his country.
