Curfew imposed on Ashanti region Zongo communities

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has directed all activities marking the celebration of the Eid-Ul-Fitr to be brought to a close at 7pm Sunday.

This directive follows tension between some rivals groups in the communities.

There was heavy security presence in Muslim communities in Kumasi as the Sarkin Zongo and other recognized Chiefs performed the Gangara rites.

The Gangara rite is a special celebration performed after the morning prayers of Eid-Ul-Fitr and involves a procession by the area’s Chief Imam and his subjects through some principal streets.

The decision to deploy security to the area follows information that factions in the chieftaincy crisis in the Zongo communities were preparing to attack each other over the performance of the Gangara, a situation that demanded proactive measures to protect lives and property.

The deputy Public Relations Officer at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Corporal Eric Ahianyo told Joynews, everything will be done to ensure that the Zongo chiefs comply with the directives.

According to Corporal Ahianyo, his men would be on the ground after the 7pm ultimatum elapses, to ensure that no one flouts the directive.
